Summary

A ballerina tale with a thoroughly modern twist! Casey Quinn has got more grace in her pinkie toe than all those prissy ballet-school girls put together-although you'd never guess it from the looks of her skinny white chicken legs and dirty high-top sneakers. It's 1959, and freckle-faced Casey lives in the red-dust countryside of South Carolina. She's a farm girl: Her family can't afford ballet lessons. But Casey's dream is to dance in New York City. And if anyone tries to stand in her way, she's going to pirouette and jeté right over them! But what if the Big Apple has something different in mind for Casey's stage debut? When she meets a visionary choreographer she calls "Miss Martha," Casey's dancing dream takes a thrillingly midcentury MODERN turn!

Author Biography

SARAH RUBIN grew up on an island off the coast of Maine, spending most of her childhood dressing up, reading, and wandering in the pine forests. Sarah earned her BA in Creative Writing and History from Skidmore College, and after teaching dance and drama for a year, she left New England for Old England, moving overseas to Winchester, where she now lives. This is her debut novel.

Excerpts

From Someday Dancer

At the top of the stairs is a large room filled with dancers. And in the middle is the most amazing woman I have ever seen. She is tall, larger than herself somehow. Like her spirit is too big for her body. Little bits seem to pour out every time she moves. The air bends around her as she prowls between the dancers.

I want to feel how those dancers look, like I'm flying.

As the dancers file out, the other woman, from the front desk, leads me into the room.

"Martha," she says to the teacher, "this girl wants to audition."

Miss Martha looks down at me.

I hesitate. Then somehow I find my voice. I ask, "What kind of dance do you teach? I've never seen it before."

She arches one eyebrow.

"A new way to move," she says.
