Summary

Metropolitanism has emerged as a new concept in urban history which serves to describe processes of spatial interferences in large cities and conurbations of global significance. Basing their approach on an older tradition in urban studies which conceptualized the metropolis as the space of density and innovation, the authors outline new applications of thick descriptions in metropolitan contexts by combining theoretical and empirical studies, social history, cultural studies, and historical ethnology. With an interdisciplinary agenda in mind, this volume provides new insights into the urban landscapes of everyday life and offers a systematic approach to the history of the modern local space.
