Excerpts

March 22, 2000. Once again I found myself back on an airplane, headed for Virginia. I felt as if I had stepped back in time, back to 1999. It had actually been only a little over a year since I first headed home to clean up my mother's mess. At least this time I was not facing the challenges alone; this time my husband was sitting in the aisle seat, right next to me.As the airplane took off from the airport in Germany, I placed my hand on top of Thomas's hand. He turned his head, looked in my eyes, and said, "Hopefully this time your daughter's duty will be finished." I looked deep into his eyes, and with a half, sad smile said, "I certainly hope so."Before the tears could start, I turned my head, looked out the window, and let my mind wander. I started remembering everything that had happened over the past year, since I returned to Germany in March of 1999.
