Originally published in Russian in 2003, it was awarded both the laureate diploma as 'the event of the year', in the first national competition of Orthodox books in Russia, and the prestigious gold medal of the Orthodox St. Makarius Foundation. This edition makes this innovative reference book available to English-speaking readers for the first time.

Author Biography

Yelena Kolyada graduated from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and completed a doctoral thesis at the Vilnius Conservatory in 1987. She is a former Senior Research Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She has also made a series of programmes on Russian church music for BBC Radio 3 and the BBC world Service.
