Summary

After the international success in the 1990s of authors such as Bernhard Schlink, Marcel Beyer, and Thomas Brussig, an impressive number of emerging German-language novelists are making a significant impact. Some have already achieved international recognition in translation (for example, Karen Duve, Daniel Kehlmann, and Sasa Stanisic); some have already won major prizes (for example, Julia Franck); others are truly "emerging authors" selected here for the quality of their writing and the attention they have already attracted (for example, Clemens Meyer, Alina Bronsky, and Ilja Trojanow). Between them they represent a range of literatures in German, from the phenomenon of "chick lit" to minority writing (from Turkish immigrants and Eastern Europe), to "pop literature" and perspectives on the former GDR as well as Germany's Nazi past. This volume devotes an essay to each of fifteen emerging German writers, examining in detail a major work of each. The works considered count among the best of contemporary German literature, and most have been translated and are widely read in English. Translated excerpts from works by Vladimir Vertlib and Clemens Meyer round out the book, which will be of interest to academics and students working in English and Comparative Literature departments in the UK, the US, and beyond, as well as to the general reader, for whom titles of texts and quotations are translated. Contributors: Lyn Marven, Stuart Taberner, Anke S. Biendarra, Stephen Brockmann, Rebecca Braun, Frauke Matthes, Brigid Haines, Julian Preece, Emily Jeremiah, Valerie Heffernan, Barbara Mennel, Heike Bartel, Kate Roy, Andrew Plowman, Sonja E. Klocke, Vladimir Vertlib, Clemens Meyer. Lyn Marven is a Lecturer in the Department of German at the University of Liverpool. Stuart Taberner is Professor of Contemporary German Literature, Culture, and Society at the University of Leeds.
