Summary

"You are already that which you long to be." These words, the last Jeru Kabbal wrote before he died, sum up the philosophy of a man who touched thousands of lives in the course of 30 years of teaching about paths to inner peace, emotional growth, and compassionate behavior. Kabbal developed his Finding Clarity Process over decades of spiritual exploration in both Eastern belief systems and Western philosophy and science. This collection drawn from his writings and workshops provides a guide to the essentials of his transformational teachings.

Author Biography

Jeru Kabbal was a twentieth-century spiritual teacher and guide. Born in 1930 in the United States as Richard Dorin Shoulders, he studied traditional Western psychology in his younger years and found it very limited. However, he was irrevocably committed to and passionate about understanding and going beyond the mind. He became devoted to understanding how we as human beings could improve the quality of our life and relationships. He studied with several spiritual teachers in the East, including Osho, and became particularly drawn to the teachings of Krishnamurti, Nisargadatta, and Ramana Maharishi, as well as to the mystical elements of Christianity. However, he was always an independent spiritual thinker. For several years he conducted workshops called Dehypnotherapy, out of which the Clarity Process originated. After a prolonged solitary retreat, in about 1990, he chose to call himself Jeru Kabbal. He died in 2000.

Leonard M. Zunin, MD, is the author of many articles and two books. Dr. Zunin has lead a distinguished and unique career in psychiatry, both in private practice and in public service. He is a nationally known lecturer and educator who, for over thirty years, has been exploring the phenomena of greeting and parting, attachment and loss, and post-trauma recovery. For the past ten years, he has served as the senior psychiatric consultant to the California Highway Patrol, Protective Services Division, Special Investigations Unit. Currently, Dr. Zunin is also a consulting psychiatrist at Napa State Hospital. He lives, loves, meditates, and balances rocks with his wife, Hilary, in Napa, California.

Robert Strock is a licensed Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist and ordained minister, specializing in relationship, mid-life crises, and death and dying. He has contributed his expertise to several foundations and is currently president of Global Bridge Foundation, a passionate supporter of self-sufficiency programs in developing countries. Robert lives his teachings with his wife, Marilyn, and three children in Southern California.

A graduate of the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, Victoria is both a spiritual and an astrological counselor and works with clients in the United States and Europe. She is also an editor of spiritual books and has worked closely with Eckhart Tolle. Though Victoria never met Jeru Kabbal, through working so closely with his teachings, she found a deep resonance with his work and feels honored to help bring it into wider publication.

Introduction xii

Chapter One FROM PARADISE TO PANIC 1(14)
It may be hard to hear, but the story of your life is primarily a story of dealing with fears.
These aren't the fears of today.
They're the fears of the subconscious, programmed by the mind-set of a four-year-old.
A happy ending can be written only by discovering yourself as you truly are in the present.
Chapter Two THE NATURE or THE SUBCONSCIOUS 15(14)
The subconscious constitutes about 99 percent of the mind.
The challenge lies in the fact that we identify with the 1 percent that makes up the conscious mind.
The subconscious mind is where our early defensive strategies originated and where they still remain a central influence.
Nevertheless, although as an adult you identify with the conscious mind, it's the subconscious mind that provides most of your programming and behavior.
The good news is that you can reprogram the subconscious.
Chapter Three THE POUR-YEAR-OLD 29(20)
Your defense system, personality, and most of your fears about survival solidified by about age four.
They once served you well, but since then, they mostly haven't changed and are undermining your adult self.
You can, however, teach your four-year-old that most of your fears are no longer based in reality.
Chapter Four THE NATURE OF MEMORY 49(14)
Memory is a kind of artificial reality.
It is not the original event—it never was and never will be.
In spite of this, the subconscious believes that the events seen in old inner photographs and movies are really happening right now.
They aren't! Helping the subconscious to see this, you are able to live more fully in the here and now.
Chapter Five THE NATURE OF DESIRE 63(14)
The major obstacle to being present in the moment is the chasing of desire.
Underneath every desire lies another one ultimately leading to the fear that you won't survive.
You need to help your four-year-old see that you are safe in this moment.
Chapter Six ARE YOU A SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY? 77(10)
As a four-year-old you unconsciously created a "script" to guide your life, and you carefully continue to follow it.
The script has a beginning and middle, but it has no ending.
You repeat the same unfinished story endlessly.
If it looks as though the script will be completed, you somehow sabotage it to stay with what is familiar.
By releasing the old scripts and patterns, you open up to real life in the moment.
Chapter Seven FEAR OF THE POSITIVE 87(10)
Here's a paradox: beyond your desire to be happy, you also unconsciously hold on to your fears.
The strongest fear is your fear of the positive, your own potential.
Why is that?
The programs that keep you unhappy originated when you were dependent on others for your survival.
Restrictions and dependency always create fears.
Chapter Eight LOVE, SEX, AND RELATIONSHIPS 97(10)
Your need for an intimate relationship, surprisingly, doesn't have much to do with love for the other.
It primarily comes from neediness and concern for yourself.
It is more an expression of your early belief that your survival depends on someone else taking care of you.
True love is complete in itself.
When you realize this, being with the other will be based less and less on neediness.
Chapter Nine THE SENSES 107(6)
The world is what you see and feel at this moment.
Through your five senses, you detect real danger in the here and now.
Unfortunately, your mind often bases your sense of danger on prior experiences rather than on the sensory input of the moment.
If you listen to your senses, you'll find that there is seldom a danger in the present moment.
Chapter Ten PRACTICAL ENLIGHTENMENT 113(14)
You can be in one of two places: in memory or in the present moment.
One is a dream world, and one is reality.
All things exist only in the present.
Chapter Eleven EXISTENCE IS DOING ALL THE WORK 127(10)
Your concerns about survival begin to diminish when you become aware that you are no longer the helpless infant you used to be, but a capable adult.
Then you begin to recognize that miraculously, Existence is allowing your breathing, making your heart beat.
Everything truly important is being done for you.
Knowing that something greater than you is taking care of you, you can relax and trust.
Chapter Twelve GRATITUDE 137(6)
The origin of gratitude is in recognizing that you are surrounded by innumerable supports.
When you shift from feeling that you need something, you recognize that you are full and complete right now.
Chapter Thirteen THE PRACTICES 143(18)
The exercises and techniques in this chapter help bring awareness into focus.
This chapter is key to learning to put into practice the teachings discussed throughout the book.
Afterword JERU'S DEATH: FINAL, REQUESTS 161(8)
Leonard M. Zunin, MD
Here we learn about Jeru's remarkable last days and unique requests.
We are given a look into how Jeru lived his teachings in the days that lead up to his death, a living and dying manifestation of being in clarity.
