Very informative book  April 28, 2011

This book is a history textbook of people who identified with Judaism; it is monumental in its insight, research and revelation. Sand makes a simple case, based on solid history and references, that the "Jewish race" is an invention of European elitists, driven by the perceived need to nationalize a religious, mystical culture. It's a very interesting and informative book, though seen as controversial by many.

Invention Of Jewish People Pa: 5 out of 5 stars based on 1 user reviews.

Summary

A historical tour de force, The Invention of the Jewish People offers a groundbreaking account of Jewish and Israeli history. Exploding the myth that there was a forced Jewish exile in the first century at the hands of the Romans, Israeli historian Shlomo Sand argues that most modern Jews descend from converts, whose native lands were scattered across the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

In this iconoclastic work, which spent nineteen weeks on the Israeli bestseller list and won the coveted Aujourd'hui Award in France, Sand provides the intellectual foundations for a new vision of Israel’s future.

Author Biography

Shlomo Sand teaches contemporary history at the University of Tel Aviv.
