Summary

This edition of Le Joueur was first published in 1918, Its editor, Arthur Tilley, was a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge. Jean FranYois Regnard was a talented comic playwright, born in Paris in 1655. This 1696 play Le Joueur, or 'The Gamester', is one of his best-known works. Here, Tilley provides the reader with the full French text of Le Joueur, complete with explanatory notes on the more difficult aspects of Regnard's language. He also includes a comprehensive English introduction to the text, which addresses both the reception of Le Joueur in Europe and the fascinating and varied life of Regnard himself. This edition will be of interest to students of French language and literature, as well as readers with a general interest in French comic theatre.
