Juan de Santa Gertrudis viajo por los territorios del sur de la Nueva Granada, la provincia de Popayan, Quito y Santa Fe de Bogota. Tras su experiencia americana, escribio en Espana las Maravillas de la naturaleza. La obra de Juan de Santa Gertrudis muestra una vision de la vida neogranadina del siglo XVIII muy diferente a la que ofrecen los documentos oficiales o las cronicas de conquista.
