Summary

What does science tell us about motivation? This book challenges common myths about motivation, and offers readers strategies for successfully motivating themselves and others.

Many unscientific and inaccurate ideas about motivation persist because they are intuitive or easily grasped. They may seem congruent with our own experiences. For example, we may attribute lazy behavior in others to their personalities, rather than to the situation they are in.

This book reveals the scientific truth about motivation. The authors identify and debunk ten persistent myths about motivation, such as the common notion that rewards increase motivation, and that some people are naturally more motivated than others. They uncover the roots of each myth and explain their surprisingly firm hold in our collective consciousness. Finally, the authors use various psychological theories of motivation and cutting-edge psychological research to offer proven strategies for promoting performance in a variety of contexts including school and work.
