Summary

Translations of Rumi’s poetry have been enthusiastically received by the English-speaking world. He speaks directly to the heart, allowing readers to feel that they know him intimately. And yet, the full flavor of his lightness and humor, his wordplay, and his Islamic references has often gone untranslated. Rumi’s poetry is direct and immediate, but it’s also measured, subtle, and nuanced in a way that earlier translations have seldom conveyed. It was, above all, a spoken poetry. Say Nothing captures the rich and varied tones of a mature voice that retains its youthful capacity for exaltation and revelation. This fully annotated, bilingual (Persian and English) edition contains both short quatrains and longer ghazals, alternating forms that reflect the shifts in Rumi’s moods and inspirations. Along with poems of ecstatic flight and equally ecstatic mourning, there are moments of terse commentary, challenging dialogs, and confrontational questioning. Extensive notes allow readers to delve more deeply into the multiple meanings of Rumi's words.

Songs and Interrogations: Rumi's Dialogues with God
A Guest in the House of Rumi: Doorways to Translation
A Journey through Love and Wisdom
Love is my only companion ...
My friend, which is better ...
Wake up, wake up ...
Look for something beyond your grasp ...
Oh how nameless, how light ...
Gracefully you pierce the heart ...
This fasting sifts the soul ...
I give my cloak to the one ...
Let Love, the Water of Life ...
If you long to be purified ...
How could I have known ...
I said: I've made a vow ...
A friend is the one who beheads you ...
Every night the image of my Turk ...
Walking on your path ...
Look at my sallow face ...
My idol entered the door ...
Do you know what this lute music ...
See how Love merges with Lovers ...
Whether I'm drunk or sober ...
One who thought the heart ...
I'm the slave of the Moon ...
Seek the art of loosening knots ...
Give me last night's wine ...
The fire of Love ...
You ask me ...
Rise up, let's raise a riot ...
All that pure ruby wine ...
I want pure wine ...
Time will put an end to this tumult ...
If you are not mad ...
Ask the lord of this house ...
I won't leave this light-filled house ...
Even though we are lost ...
Happy the one who's free ...
If a tree could move ...
Love Is the way of our Prophet ...
We are from above ...
If you don't catch the scent ...
What a rapture to fly in the sky ...
The heart is like grain ...
I am your Friend ...
Lovers, O Lovers ...
Alas, time has passed ...
