Summary

Why do people hurt themselves? For some, cutting or burning themselves is a way of numbing previous abuse. For others, it is a way of controlling overwhelming chaotic feelings. This is the first book on self-inflicted violence written for a general audience, primarily for those who are victims of this disturbing and dangerous behaviour. Psychologist Tracy Alderman helps sufferers explore the reasons for their actions and teaches them what they can do to help themselves, either through psychotherapy or by taking steps on their own.

Author Biography

Tracy Alderman, Ph.D. is director of research and a core faculty member at the University for Humanistic Studies, an adjunct instructor of psychology at Chapman University, and a staff psychologist for the California Department of Corrections.
